Dear Valued Community Members,

Your continued support is deeply appreciated as we come together to make this event a meaningful and successful celebration of our community.

As we did at our inaugural event, on October 17th we will be presenting awards and providing financial support to selected young people who are deserving of recognition for their personal journeys, their dedication and efforts toward achieving success, and their positive contributions to our community.

This is an opportunity for us to recognize, encourage, and invest in the next generation of young people who are making a difference.

We look forward to celebrating their achievements and supporting these inspiring young individuals together.

Upcoming AGCLEO 2023 Initiatives

  • We hope to continue to build on the tradition of organizing impactful events.
  • In February we will partner with our community partners for a black history month event focusing on Ghanaian/Afro Canadian History and awareness
  • Presentation on zoom to Ghanaian  Seniors on Elder Abuse prevention
  • In addition to our Speaker Series events, we will have our  Annual BBQ for our members and their family members as well as invited guests from the Ghanaian/racialized community.
  • We will also host our annual Soccer Tournament in partnership with our valued community partners.
  • We will also visit a shelter and serve meals to members of the residents.
  • We are also planning to partner with Law enforcement agencies to deliver a recruiting information session to  community members.
  • There will be a back-to-school initiative focused on our young people where we will count on our membership to sponsor a backpack and mentor one of our local Ghanaian/racialized students.

2022 Highlights of Past Initiatives

  • We have held our Speaker Series which provides helpful information into a variety of issues with guest speakers from the law enforcement community and a member from the Association of Black Law Enforcers (A.B.L.E)
  • We have held two Christmas fundraising initiatives where members raised money and donated over two thousand dollars to under-privileged families within our community
  •  In our continued effort to build a strong relationships with our valued community partners and members of the Ghanaian/ racialized community, we took part in the planning of a community soccer tournament and  participated as well. The positive feed back from the community was very encouraging.
  • Each summer our association have held our annual BBQ at Paul Coffey Park, bringing members and their families together as well as invited guests.
  • Our association also provided support and financial assistance to the family of our fallen officer in early 2022
  • Flyers laying out the objective of A.G.C.L.E.O were disseminated in the community encouraging community members to contact us.
  • Our board members have answered several recruiting inquires and several law related questions from our fellow Ghanaians, Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario and from the Ghanaian consulate office.
  • Board members have also made presentations to churches including race related topics

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

York Regional Police (YRP) observed the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by hosting a free community event at the Markham Event Centre with the theme “Celebrating the Strength of Our Diversity”. YRP partnered with York Region’s multicultural community to celebrate the community’s diversity while collectively re-affirming a commitment to the eradication of racial discrimination. About 1,000 people enjoyed an afternoon of cultural performances, networking, 80 community information booths, displays and food sampling. It is the hope of the YRP, by continued collaborations with York Region communities, to one day see the permanent eradication of racism, prejudice and hatred. Everyone working together can build resilience, social cohesion, and peaceful co-existence in communities that personify the principles of human rights and social justice through expressions of courtesy, dignity, respect and equality for all people every day.

Const. Kwame Amoateng of the North Preston RCMP detachment says he hopes his work will positively impact a child’s life one day.

“I want them to feel seen and know that they are capable of anything. If I can achieve that, it would make my entire career as an RCMP officer a success,” he says.

Amoateng was born in Ghana and moved to Toronto at the age of eight. This is where he had his own first experience with an RCMP officer that greatly impacted his life.

“As a teenager, I found myself in a bit of trouble, and I ended up speaking with an RCMP officer,” explains Amoateng.

“The officer recognized that I was a young Black man and that because of my skin colour, my life would have its challenges. It was the first time I felt like someone took the time to talk to me, to see me for who I was, and it meant a lot to me. And ever since, I’ve been trying to pass on that same mentorship that I received from that officer in the work that I do.”
